Questions people actually ask
These are real questions that arrived by mail, answered against the official sources rather than the forums. If yours is not here, write in and it will be.
Nothing matches that yet. Try a shorter word, or write in and it becomes a page like the others.

Taiwan will exchange my licence. Where do I go and what happens there?
Any Motor Vehicles Office does the exchange, over the counter, without an appointment, while you wait. NT$200 and you leave with the Taiwanese licence. Here is the office, the folder and the four things that stop people at the window.

Where can I practise the Taiwan written driving test, and is there an official simulator?
The official 監理服務網 (mvdis) mock exam is free, online and in 8 languages, and every question in the real Taiwan written test comes from the free official question bank. Where to practise, the current format, and how to sit the exam in your own language.

Taiwan will exchange my car licence but not my motorcycle one. Why?
Of the 200 places on Taiwan's official reciprocity table, 82 exchange a car licence with no exam. Eight exchange a motorcycle one. Here is why the scooter is the hard part, and exactly what the exam involves.

What changed in the Taiwan driving exams in 2026?
The car circuit test gained a pedestrian crossing on 31 March 2026 and its written paper changed shape on 30 June. The scooter written paper changed on 30 January. Booking moved for both. Here is every change, with the official source and the date it took effect.

What happens if my foreign driving licence expires while I live in Taiwan?
If your home country licence is about to expire, exchange it in Taiwan before it does. After the exchange, your Taiwan licence stands on its own and the old one expiring changes nothing. Checked against the 公路局 rules and 道路交通安全規則 §52.

What are the "verification" and "translation" Taiwan asks for with my licence?
Taiwan wants your foreign licence verified, and translated if it is not in English. An English licence needs no translation at all. Both can be arranged in Taiwan, which most people do not realise.

Does my Taiwan driving licence expire when my ARC does?
No. A Taiwan driving licence runs six years from the day it was issued, by law. Your ARC is a document you have to show in order to renew it, not the date it dies on. What the law actually says, and what happens if you let it lapse.

My country has no reciprocity with Taiwan. What does the full exam actually involve?
If Taiwan will not exchange your licence you take the ordinary Taiwanese exams. Here is the whole route for car and for scooter, the learner permit, the three-month wait, every fee, and why the scooter is dramatically faster.
Checked -
Can I get a Taiwanese licence on my own, without a driving school?
Neither the car nor the scooter licence requires a driving school. The law says so in one sentence. Here is what the self-study route actually costs, the learner permit, the three-month wait that only applies to cars, and the one thing self-study genuinely cannot give you.

How does the Taiwan motorcycle riding test actually work?
The riding circuit is marked against ten official items, not five, and most mistakes on the sheet cost 32 points against a 70-point pass mark. Every item drawn out, what each one costs, and the official demonstration videos filmed at real test centres.

My bike is over 150cc. Do I need a different licence?
The licence line in Taiwan is 250cc, not 150cc, and the 150 you are thinking of is a tax line. Above 250cc you need a separate licence you cannot self-study, and above 550cc the bike gets a front plate and the motorway.
